A RARE EARLY UCHIGATANA TSUBA AND THREE OTHERS
Muromachi/Edo Period (15/19th century)
The plain yamagane plate inlaid with a broad band of shakudo very slightly raised, with the later addition of two yamagane menuki of snails with gilt details, the reverse with a similar narrower band in shakudo hirazogan, traces of black lacquer remaining, 8.3cm; a copper tuba inlaid with two snails in shakudo and gold takazogan, 8.3cm. x 8.5cm.; a Nara school sentoku tsuba with Jurojin looking up at a crane, the details on the front inlaid in silver, copper, shakudo, shibuichi and gold, with signature Toshinaga with a kao, 7.3cm.; an almost circular, shibuichi Nara school tsuba, carved and inlaid with Toba on his mule going into exile, his servant following on foot, the inlays in shakudo, copper, silver and two colours of gold, with signature Toshinaga with a kao, 6.65cm.; and an elongated hexagonal shakudo tanto tsuba inlaid with a circular vase surrounded by foliage, with a swallow flying past, three geese passing by on the reverse, with signature Kiyonaga (Seiju) with a kao, 5.7cm.
