A TSUBA BY BUSHU MASACHIKA AND NINE OTHERS
Edo period (17th/19th century)
An oval iron tsuba, boldly carved and pierced with peonies in full bloom carved proud of and overlapping the rim, signed Bushu ju Masachika saku, 7.7cm.; an almost circular iron Kyo Shoami tsuba with a cat-scratched gold fukurin, carved and pierced with kiku and kiri mon over a background of fishing nets, 8.25cm; the face with a figure of Bishamonten, holding a halberd in one hand and a stupa in the other, confronting a tiger, the warrior-god in high relief of iron, with details inlaid in silver and two colours of gold, the reverse with a pine tree and a garden fence, with signature Sekijoken Motozane, 7.2cm.; a circular tsuba pierced and carved with vines on a garden fence, signed Choshu Hagi ju Hisatsugu saku, 7.1cm.; another example of the work of the previous maker, of circular form, carved and pierced with grapnels and their ropes, signed Choshu Hagi ju Hisatsugu saku, 7.6cm.; a smaller, oval tsuba, carved and pierced with lotus leaves and flowers, signed Choshu Hagi no ju Sakunoshin Tomohisa, 7cm.; a large, late Owari-style tsuba, pierced with a single vertical bar crossing floral forms, 8.4cm.; a tsuba carved and pierced with four interwoven, snaking lobes, 7.2cm.; an oval tsuba, the rim carved in the form of a circular tachi, a folded fan lying beside the sword, 6.8cm.; and a tsuba shaped as a chidori [plover], signed illegibly, 8.85cm.
