A TSUBA BY WASHIDA MITSUTOKI, ANOTHER BY NARA TSUNESHIGE AND THREE OTHERS
Edo period (18th/19th century)
An oval shibuichi tsuba carved and pierced with a basket containing a large orange through a hole in the fruit two sennin can be seen playing go, signed Oizumi Washi(da) Mitsutoki, 7.1cm.; an oval shakudo tsuba inlaid in gold with three horses gambolling amongst water plantains beside a stream, with signature Hosono Masamori with a kao, 6.95cm.; an almost circular shakudo tsuba inlaid and carved with Chokaro shaking a horse out of his gourd, the reverse with a pine tree, with signature Issando Joi, 7.5cm.; a rounded square Nara school sentoku tsuba carved and pierced with Chinnan conjuring up a dragon from his begging bowl, signed Tsuneshige, 7.6cm.; and a dark shibuichi tsuba carved and inlaid in silver, shibuichi, copper and gold with salt burners tending their kiln beside the sea, the reverse with a man fishing from a hut and looking up at a passing flight of geese, with signature Hosono Sozaemon Masamori with a kao, 6.25cm.
