A COPPER HIKONE-STYLE TSUBA AND SIX OTHERS
Edo period (18th/19th century)
A circular copper Shoami tsuba carved with the Seven Sages of the Bamboo Grove, 7.9cm.; an oval copper ishime tsuba carved with Shoki holding down an oni under a broken straw hat, with signature Joi on the reverse with a kao inlaid in shakudo and silver, 7.1cm.; an oval copper tsuba with a shakudo rim, carved with a ground simulating woven copper strips, 7cm.; a copper mokko-shaped tsuba carved on both sides with breaking waves, 8.1cm.; a shakudo Nara school tanto tsuba inlaid with a rat looking over the edge of a kitchen grinding bowl, 6.5cm.; an oval copper tsuba carved with a figure of Kanzan with a handscroll, the name Joi roughly inscribed on the reverse, 7cm.; and an oval shakudo, or very dark shibuichi tsuba delicately carved with the seated, sleeping figure of Zhuangzi, an open book before him, leaning on a book cabinet, while he, himself, as a butterfly, appears in his dream, signed Masanobu, 6.6cm.
