A SHAKUDO TSUBA WITH HORSES IN KATAKIRI AND FIVE OTHERS
Edo period (17th/19th century)
A fine circular shakudo tsuba carved on both sides with massed horses, 7.2cm.; an oval shibuichi tsuba, the polished surface of the plate inlaid in various metals with the seated figures of an entertainer with a performing monkey, and a sanbaso dancer playing a samisen, on the reverse are the hats of both men, and a sword, signed Tokaken Tomonaga, 6.7cm.; an oval shibuichi tsuba carved and inlaid with a Chinese man riding an ox in various metals, with signature Toshinaga, 6.5cm., a good circular sentoku tsuba carved and inlaid with a Chinese archer standing amongst reeds, having beaten up a flight of birds, probably Uchikoshi school, 7.3cm.; a black-lacquered yamagane tsuba inlaid in silver, shakudo and gilt copper with an archer on horseback on the seashore shooting an arrow at a bird flying over a boat, 6.9cm.; and a circular sentoku tsuba, the ground decorated with chrysanthemums and grasses by a riverbank, a horse inlaid in gold coming down to drink, 7.2cm.
