A TSUBA BY NAKAGAWA KATSUTSUGU AND EIGHT OTHERS
Edo period (18th/19th century)
A circular tsuba carved and pierced within the rim with a dragon in clouds above raging waves, details in gold nunome-zogan, signed Nakagawa Katsutsugu and dated on the reverse Bunkyu ni [1862] inu-no-toshi cho getsu kore o, inscribed with the information that this was made to order, 7cm.; an oval iron tsuba, carved with a fierce nio within his fenced enclosure at a temple gate, the reverse with a pine tree, 7.3cm.; a rounded hexagonal tsuba carved with a flowering plant, 7.9cm.; a circular Hamano school tsuba, carved and inlaid with a boy seated on an ox under a pine tree beside a stream, the boy inlaid in silver, shibuichi and gold, other details inlaid in copper and gold, signed Masayuki, 7.5cm.; an almost circular tsuba, carved and pierced with bamboo leaves and stems, one of which forms the rim, signed Otaka Hironaga, 7.3cm.; an almost circular Ito-sukashi tsuba tapering towards the rim, saw-pierced and carved in shishiai-bori with swallows flying over a stream beneath a willow tree, signed Tsunemasa, 7.55cm.; a square tsuba, the corners turned inwards, carved with huts beside a lake, with drying fishing nets, Mount Fuji in the distance, signed Harumichi; a large nanban tsuba pierced and carved with reishi fungus, details in gold and silver nunome-zogan, 18th/19th century, 9.1cm; and a mokko-shaped tsuba, carved with men in small boats beside two sea-going junks,signed Choshu Hagi no ju Yaji Tomohisa, 19th century, 7.4cm.
