A FINE LARGE HIZEN TSUBA AND EIGHT OTHERS
Muromachi/Edo period (15th/19th century)
A fine, large Hizen sukashi tsuba, carved and pierced with a shippo-pattern, on which have alighted two butterflies, one finished in gold nunome-zogan and the other in silver, the rim part gilt, 8.8cm.; an elongated oval tsuba with a heavy iron plate, inlaid in copper, sentoku, silver and gold with Raiden and Futen amongst clouds, with signature Haruaki Hogen, with an inlaid gold kao, inscription refers to East, snake, cockerel and South, perhaps a cyclical dating, pitting on rim, 9cm.; a cup-shaped iron tsuba, carved with three nasubi [eggplants], signed Kofu no ju Tatsunao, 7.7cm.; an oval, iron sukashi tsuba carved and pierced with windswept irises, 7.8cm.; an iron tsuba carved in the plate and inlaid with Koan, bare-chested, riding on a minogame, with signature Issando Joi, with a gold inlaid kao, 7.7cm.; an iron tsuba carved and inlaid with a sarumawashi and his performing monkey being watched by a passing warrior, the reverse with pine saplings, with signature Heianjo Nagatsune, 7.2cm.; a Kyo-sukashi tsuba pierced with two wheels and a kiri-mon (this tsuba has been in a fire, and is covered with fire-scale), 8cm.; a very fine and rare Heianjo quatreform tsuba, carved in the plate and inlaid in brass and silver with four hares sporting over waves under the moon, in fine condition for its period, late Muromachi to Momoyama, 7.3cm.; and an interesting oval iron Nanban tsuba, formed from two plates, joined by the rim and the seppa-dai, with a space between them, one face decorated with a traditional pierced nanban karakusa pattern, edged with waves and the other with a loosely woven basket-weave design, 7.5cm.
