A HEIANJO TSUBA AND THIRTEEN OTHERS
Muromachi/Edo period (15th/19th century)
An iron sukashi tsuba pierced with two chidori amid mitsu-tomoe and breaking waves, some details in gold, 8.2cm.; a lozenge-shaped iron Heianjo-zogan tsuba inlaid with karakusa and cloud forms (some inlay missing), 7.8cm.; a sukashi tsuba, the shape formed from two spurred rings, 7.2cm.; a Tanaka school mokko-shaped iron tsuba, carved with pine trees on a mountainside and two cranes coming in to their nest as the sun goes down, 7.75cm.; a lacquered iron tsuba engraved with bonji [Sanskrit characters] and star constellations, 8.45cm.; a mokko-shaped Daigoro style tsuba pierced with a brushwood fence, 7.3cm.; a circular iron tsuba pierced with Genji-mon forms and inlaid in shibuichi and gold with returning geese, 8.1cm.; an eight pointed star-shaped iron tsuba pierced with five circular holes, signed (Shoami?) Morikuni, 8cm.; an iron tanto tsuba in the form of a kettle with loose rings, a ladle and tea whisk carved into the lower part of the kettle, with signature Nobuie, 6.4cm.; and a small iron mokko-shaped tsuba, pierced with a dragon, with signature Seiryuken Eiju with a gold kao, 6.5cm.; a late Owari school tsuba pierced with a design of rectangles and short bars, 7.8cm.; a circular iron Heianjo tsuba inlaid on each side with two manji and two vajra-like forms in brass and a narrow inlaid brass band around the edge on each side, 8.5cm.; an oval iron Shoami school tsuba, carved with bamboo in katakiri-bori on both sides, with signature Yasuchika, 7.85cm.; and a cast bronze tsuba with a dragon in the round, with signature Echizen no ju Kinai saku, 7.2cm.
