A KYO SUKASHI TSUBA AND FOURTEEN OTHERS
Muromachi/Edo period (16th/19th century)
An iron Kyo-sukashi tsuba pierced with a diamond-shaped design, 8.4cm.; a circular iron tsuba inlaid in brass with flowers and scrolling vines between roped borders, Heianjo school, 8.3cm; a mokko-shaped iron tsuba, the lobes punched in the form of awabi shells, with bits of seaweed in gold, 8.2cm.; a diamond-shaped iron tsuba, the web pierced with a rectangle with a cross inside it, 7.5cm; an iron Kyo-sukashi tsuba pierced with the five-leafed aoi-mon, 7.9cm.; a rounded square iron tsuba pierced with five rectangles and these inlaid with square, grid-like forms in brass, copper and yamagane, with a shakudo rim, probably amateur work, 7.2cm.; a rounded square iron tsuba carved and inlaid on the face with three partly-peeled heads of sweet corn, two of them wrapped and tied for carrying, the reverse with three dolls, with signature on the reverse Taisen Yoshihide and signed on the face Hotetsu Naokatsu saku, 8.35cm.; an Aizu Shoami tsuba carved and inlaid in shakudo with a man in a boat fishing, the reverse with pine trees on a strand of land beside a lake, signed Kanenori, 8.2cm.; an iron tsuba carved and pierced in the form of a chrysanthemum bloom, with leaves forming the ryohitsu, 7.9cm.; an iron katchushi tsuba pierced with two flower forms and inlaid in silver and shakudo with four arrowheads, 8cm.; and a sukashi tsuba pierced with Mount Fuji, a nasubi [egg-plant] and a bird, presumably intended for a hawk, in which case the subject is 'the most auspicious dream', 19th century, 6.4cm.; an iron Heianjo tsuba of multi-lobed form inlaid in brass with grasses and dew, 8.3cm.; a circular iron Heianjo tsuba inlaid with three brass butterflies on the face and two on the reverse, 7.7cm.; a large iron gomoku-zogan tsuba with a brass roped rim, pierced with mitsu-tomoe and the surface inlaid with brass gomoku-zogan, 9cm.; and a circular iron Onin tsuba inlaid with mokko mon, flying geese, chrysanthemum blooms, pine cones and needles and other flowers, foliage and vines (one missing), 7.75cm.
