Lot Essay

The inscription on the box indicates that this was given to a person called Matsura Masanobu. The name Satsukiame suggests the silently falling rain of May, fragrant with the lush Japanese spring, as reflected in the brown iron glaze slightly clustering in black drops, resembling raindrops running down a stone. The Zeze kilns were located on Lake Biwa near the town of Otsu and produced pottery for the use of the daimyo from the 17th century to the end of the Edo period, with some interruptions.
