Unsigned, Edo Period (Late 18th/19th Century)
Black lacquer ground; decoration in gold and aokin hiramaki-e; the interior nashiji with decoration in gold foil and hiramaki-e, shell, shakudo and silver; silver fittings; silk cords

The exterior with arrangements of camellia, pine, plum, peony and other plants against a geometric design; the interior of the lid with tokusa [scouring rush] and a gardener's sickle under a three-quarter moon; the ink-stone let into a recess in an inner tray fitted into the box, decorated with the same geometric design as the interior; the suiteki [water-dropper] missing
