Signed Ganshosai Shunsui, Meiji/Taisho Periods (Early 20th Century)
The outer sheath with a black-lacquer ground decorated in gold, aokin and silver togidashi-e; the inro with a brown-black ground decorated in gold, silver and coloured togidashi-e; compartments red lacquer; risers togidashi-e; shoulders and rims gold lacquer; signed in gold hiramaki- e underneath Ganshosai Gansui with a red lacquer kao
The outer sheath with a variety of geometric and stylised floral patterns; the risers from top to bottom with, respectively, sayagata ni hana [broken-cross geometric], silk brocade, shippo-zunagi [linked jewel] and seigaiha [overlapping wave] patterns, the inro with a mounted medieval courtier on each side
