The present work was painted in Paris in 1923 in Tony Gandarillas's house in the avenue Montaigne. Wood had moved in with Gandarillas in the summer after their travels around Italy. It was during this time that Wood met Picasso, Eugenia Errazuriz, Jean Cocteau, the Marchesa Casati, and many of the great personalities of the period (see R. Ingleby, Christopher Wood An English Painter, London, 1995, pp. 72-6).
