The Pontefract Gold Cup of 1824 was run on 8 September by a field of 6 horses over a course of 2 miles and 7 furlongs. The race was won by the Duke of Leeds' bay horse Mercutio, ridden by Henry Edwards, beating the favourite Buzzard. Mercutio had won the Silver Cup at Newmarket earlier in the year, together with the Doncaster Club Stakes and the Doncaster Cup.
