Provenance
Huntington Cairns (1904-1984) was a man of parts--lawyer, critic, public servant, naturalist, connoisseur, polymath. At the suggestion of fellow Baltimorean H.L. Mencken, Cairns passed up undergraduate study and went directly to the University of Maryland Law School. After several years in private practice, he became special counsel to the U.S. Treasury Department. From 1943 to 1965 he put his knowledge of art and the law to good use as secretary, treasurer and general counsel to the National Gallery of Art.
