A brown lacquer suzuribako
and lid, of rounded rectangular shape with lobed corners, the interior decorated in shell with carp among waves, with a replacement fitted inkstone and a bronze suiteki (water-dropper) in the form of a tori-kabuto (cap worn in court bugaku dancing), the lid inscribed in silver takamaki-e with a poem "Its eyes are bright like a precious pearl. Its scales are like gold, and now and again it jumps out of the waves and back into the deep; when will it be lifted over the dragon gate ? Living in the water, calm or stormy, it heeds not time", within inset aogai borders of geometric pattern, beaded brass rims and shaped foot; Japan or Ryukyu Islands (Okinawa) -- 10.7/8in. (27.6cm) wide, 18th Century, (minor old wear and some losses to interior inset aogai).
