AN ATTIC BLACK-FIGURED TYRRHENIAN AMPHORA
attributed to the o.l.l. group, circa 560-550 b.c.
One side with a combat between two warriors, perhaps Achilles and Memnon, each armed with greaves, a crested Corinthian helmet and a sword suspended over the shoulder, wielding a spear and carrying a circular shield, a tripod as the blazon on the shield to the right, with nonsense inscriptions above and below, with two women, perhaps Eos and Thetis, and two bearded men, looking on from either side, the women in chitons and himations, the men wearing striped himations, a stag between two panthers below, a lotus and palmette cross on the neck; the other side with three pairs of combating warriors, all wearing greaves and a shieved sword hung on a baldric, in the center a warrior strides to the right with his spear upraised, wearing a crested Corinthian helmet and holding a Boeotian shield with a scale pattern on the interior, the warrior to the right crouches on one knee, his head turned back, wearing a short chiton and a high-crested Corinthian helmet, his circular shield held out in front, his spear upraised, to their left a warrior in a crested Corinthian helmet strides to the right, his spear upraised, a circular shield in his left hand, and a warrior in a high-crested Corinthian helmet on his knees with his head turned back, his circular shield held behind him, his spear upraised, and to the right two warriors in high crested Corinthian helmets, one strides to the right, his spear upraised, his circular shield out to the side, and the other on his knees, his head turned back, his large circular shield behind him in profile, his spear upraised, with a band of animals below including a pair of confronting lions with their heads turned back between a pair of goats, two rosettes above the lions; a palmette-lotus festoon on the neck, rays above the foot and alternating red and black tongues on the shoulders; details in added red and white
