Lot Essay

When sold in 1966, this picture was catalogued as a portrait of Anne Strode, by William Hogarth. Anne Strode was born in 1711 and a conversation piece by Hogarth of The Strode family, circa 1738, showing her as an adult, is in the Tate Gallery, London.
