MONROE, Marilyn, and MILLER, Arthur.
CERTIFICATE OF CONVERSION TO JUDAISM

Document signed ("Marilyn Monroe"), partly printed and accomplished in manuscript, also signed by her husband ("Arthur Miller"), "Rabbi Robert E. Goldberg", and two witnesses. 1 page, quarto, Lewisboro, New York, July 1, 1956.

Dating from an important period in Marilyn's life in which she moved to New York to escape the trivial roles Hollywood was foisting on her, and began to study with the Strasbergs, the document cemented the union between the sex symbol of the century and the intellectual playwright. Characterized -- not entirely fairly -- as the quintessential Owl and Pussycat matchup, the union would last five years, and would not be at all what Marilyn had hoped or evidently needed. Initially her talent and skills flourished. She surprised critics with her performances in "Bus Stop" and "Some Like it Hot." It was during this time, however, that her addiction to pills and booze would grow out of control, leading to physical exhaustion and mental disarray. She divorced Miller on January 21, 1961, and a month later entered a hospital for extensive psychiatric care. This important document is believed to be the Rabbi's copy.
