Paul Eluard's poem was first published in l'Humanité, the French Communist Party newspaper in 1936. It combined art and political engagement in a moving denunciation of the Spanish Civil War and would inspire Picasso's series Sueno y mentira de Franco produced early in 1937. It was Eluard who had introduced Picasso to Dora Maar in 1936, and thus fitting that the artist would choose her portrait to illustrate his friend's poem.
