Parts 1 & 2 only (of 5) in 2 volumes, 4° (220 x 159mm). Title of vol.I printed in red and black with an engraved medallion portrait of the author, 7 engraved plates, mostly folding, a few illustrations in the text, half-titles. (Short tear in one folding plate, light browning.) Contemporary Neapolitan red morocco, sides with roll-tooled border of a lattice ornament and palmette, corners of scallop shells, arabesques and fleur-de-lis, central arms of the dedicatee, Carlo VII, King of the Two Sicilies (later Carlos III of Spain), gilt spines with crown, in top compartment and fleur-de-lys in others, floral gilt pastedowns depicting oriental figures, some on elephants, and birds, gilt edges (slightly rubbed, neat restorations at spine). Provenance: Carlo VII of the Two Sicilies (binding); Emanuel, Conte de Nay et de Richecourt (18th-century armorial bookplate).
