FIRST EDITION. A visionary from an early age, St. Catherine of Siena joined the Dominican Tertiaries and devoted her life to tending the sick and the conversion of sinners. In 1375 she received the stigmata, although, in answer to her prayer, the marks remained invisible. Catherine also devoted herself to healing the schism in the Church and her letters, which number over 400, represent the fullest expression of her thought and actions. The present selection of 31 letters primarily concerns spiritual advice. This is the first of only five books known to have been printed at this press. Variant copies are known (Oxford, Bodleian), which contain a woodcut on the verso of the first leaf, otherwise blank. [Not H]CR 4687; BMC VI 838 (IA. 29003); Goff C-280; GW 6221; IGI 2586.
