8° (153 x 90mm). Roman type (title and headings), italic type (text). (Very light spotting.) French early 19th-century blue straight-grained morocco tooled in gilt and blind, the corners and spine with pointillé decoration, marbled endpapers, vellum flyleaves, gilt edges. Provenance: numerous early annotations washed; Antoine-Auguste Renouard? (1765-1853, vellum flyleaves, binding, although not identical to copies in the catalogue of his library, 1819, p.229); C.F.L. (initials on title); Emmanuel Rodocanachi (bookplate, sale Paris, 7-8 May 1934, lot 16); Wilfred Merton (booklabel).
FIRST ALDINE EDITION, first issue, with 'Propetius' on title. Fletcher (New Aldine Studies) has argued that the date is 'new style', i.e. January 1502, which makes it among the earliest books printed in Aldus's innovative series of libri portatiles, works of Greek and Latin classics and Italian poetry printed in octavo-format with Griffo's italic types. Adams C-1137; Renouard 39:16.
