CONLIN, Revd Canon J.R. Roma Sancta sive Benedicti XIII...& S.R.E. Cardinalium Viva Virtutum Imago...Continentur Vitae...Omnium S.R.E. Cardinalium qui Ultimo Conclavi anno 1724 interfuêre. Augsburg: 1726. 2°. Title in red and black, additional engraved title, portrait of Pope Benedict XIII and 71 portraits of the cardinals by J.C. Kolb. 19th-century green panelled morocco gilt by Grant & Bolton, Booksellers of Dublin, spine in six compartments, lettered in the second and third, gilt turn-ins, gilt edges (very slightly scuffed).
Extra-illustrated with the insertion of 35 letters signed by cardinals, 1705-1709, mostly addressing formal Christmas greetings to Cardinal della Gherardesca, Archbishop of Florence.
Vincenzo Orsini was elected as Pope Benedict XIII on 29 May 1724; he died on 21 February 1730. The period was one of declining prestige for the papacy, characterised by struggles against nepotism and debt; a tendency which however was temporarily reversed during Benedict's reign by the 'magnificent peculations' (Encycl. Brit.) of Cardinal Coscia.
