Provenance: Jacques Raoul de la Guibourgere (Bp. of Saintes, 1632-46, binding); Charles C. Kalbfleisch (booklabel, sale Parke-Bernet, 10 January 1944, lot 361, $50).
A FINELY-BOUND COPY OF 'LA PLUS COMPLèTE ET LA MEILLEURE éDITION QUI EûT PARU JUSQU'ALORS DE CE POëTE' (Brunet), from the library of the classical scholar Charles Kalbfleisch. Brunet notes that although Willem Canter is described on the title as the translator, this translation was actually the work of Aemilius Portus, and that the book is rare: 'les exemplaires n'en sont pas commun'. The present copy contains the 10 index leaves called for by Graesse (i.e. )(-2)(4; 3)(2), and appears to be complete, although Brunet calls, presumably erroneously, for 18 index leaves. Brunet II, 1096-1097; Graesse II, p.519; Renouard Estienne p.196, 11.
CAUSISINUS, Nicolaus. De eloquentia sacra et humana. Paris: Guillaume Pele, 1636. 4° (225 x 161mm). Greek and Latin text, woodcut Jesuit device on title. Contemporary French gold-tooled citron calf, elaborately tooled with central arms of Raoul de la Guibourgere, Bishop of Saintes, gilt edges (minor repairs at corners and spine ends). Provenance: Raoul de la Guibourgere (Bishop of Saintes, 1632-46, binding); Pierre Marot (inscriptions dated 1810).
Both bindings share tools found on another French binding of c.1630-40, bound for Henri de Baudéan, Comte de Parabère (1593-1653, cf. Olivier 1067, fer 1), reproduced in Hobson's Thirty Bindings, plate XIX. (2)
