4° (209 x 155mm). Small title woodcut of the Virgin and Child and 25 full-page illustrations of tortures. (Some browning and spotting.) 19th-century green blindstamped hard-grained morocco, gilt turn-ins, gilt edges (extremities a little rubbed). Provenance: two 17th-century stamps on title; E. Richmond Swales (flyleaf inscription).

Second edition, the first in Latin, of Gallonio's scholarly work on the various methods of torture undergone by the early martyrs. The first edition appeared in Italian and with engravings in 1591. The author, a priest of the Oratory whose press printed this and a few other works, also wrote a history of Roman virgins and several biographies of saints, including St. Philip Neri, the Oratory's founder.
