GELLI, Giambattista (1498-1563). Capricci...col dialogo dell'inuidia, & con la tauola, nuoamente aggiunti. Florence: Anton Francesco Doni, 1546.
4° (196 x 128mm). Large woodcut device on title with a fine portrait of the author on the verso. Crimson jansenist morocco by Duru (light stain on front cover). Provenance: Gulielmo Libri (pencilled note on front endpaper 'Libri [Paris sale] 1847, [lot] 2706 [in ink]'.
Second edition, printed a few months after the first, of Gelli's philosophical dialogues. Both editions were unauthorised and caused great offence to their author, as he reveals in his La prima lettione fatta sopra un luogo di Dante, Florence, 1549. This is one of only 20 books from this short-lived press (1546-47) established by Doni with the assistance of Duke Cosimo to act as a counterbalance to the Giunta, well-known for their republicanism. All the books were in the vernacular and all were printed in the same neat italic type. All are now quite rare. Adams G-331; Gamba 487 'non meno rara della prima'; Marsili-Libelli, Anton Francesco Doni, scrittore e stampatore, IV.
