LONGUS. Les amours pastorales de Daphnis et de Chloé. [Paris: 1745].
4° (199 x 156mm). Engraved title device of two doves, repeated as a tailpiece, engraved frontispiece after Coypel (dated 1718) and 29 plates (including the plate of Les petits pieds) after Philippe d'Orléans, all engraved by Audran and coloured by a contemporary hand, 4 en-têtes, also hand-coloured, by Cochin, ruled in red throughout, every page of text and the plates within an illuminated border of a gold fillet around which is entwined ornate spirals of red and green, 4 culs-de-lampe, each depicting a basket of flowers, painted in the same colours. (Light spotting.) Contemporary French red morocco gilt in the style of Padeloup, border round sides composed of alternating scroll and network tools with flower tool at each intersection, cornerpieces made up of a scallop tool and other small tools with a large fleuron at the inner corner, large fleuron in each spine compartment, gilt turn-ins, watered silk endleaves, gilt edges, modern red half morocco chemise and marbled paper slipcase.
AN ELABORATELY COLOURED, LARGE-PAPER COPY of the second appearance of these celebrated illustrations by Philippe d'Orléans, Regent of France (1674-1723). It is here printed in 4° format 'designed to provide an improved setting for the Regent's plate' (Ray). Although dated 1714 (as in the 1718 edition), the plates are entirely different and newly engraved. They were first published in 1718. Cohen-de Ricci curiously makes no mention of coloured copies.
