PALLADIO, Andrea (1518-1580). I quattro libri dell'architettura. Venice: Bartolomeo Carampello, 1581.
4 parts, 2° (293 x 196mm). Woodcut architectural title borders incorporating a variant of Franceschi's device, device [Vaccaro p.267] at end, woodcut illustrations, plans and diagrams, 156 full-page, woodcut initials. (Occasional light browning or spotting, a few paper flaws on title, margins with short tears or worming occasionally affecting text or illustrations, some leaves trimmed affecting headline or signature, bifolium 3D2.3 probably supplied from another copy.) Early vellum, titled in later manuscript on the spine (a little discoloured and marked, pastedowns partially lifted, upper hinge split, extremities rubbed with slight loss, a few wormholes). Provenance: 'Jo:Ma: Casta:' (early inscription on title); '0-2-0 Liffey Street Stall. Dublin' (pencilled purchase note on rear pastedown and other pencil annotations); Lord James Butler (bookplate).
SECOND, RESET EDITION of a work which 'exerted a powerful influence on contemporary architecture and classical ideals until the end of the eighteenth century' (PMM 92). The first edition of I quattro libri dell'architettura was published in Venice by Domenico de' Franceschi in 1570, and the present edition employs the same woodcuts for the titles and illustrations - attributed to Giovanni and Cristoforo Chrieger and Cristoforo Coriolano et al. by Fowler - with reset type and new initials (cf. Fowler 212-213). With the final blank, often missing. Adams P-101; Berlin Kat. 2594; Cicognara 595; Fowler 213.
