4° (229 x 168mm). Title printed in red and black, text in Greek and Latin. (Lightly browned.) Contemporary French tan morocco, a semé of crowned Ls and fleurs-de-lys on sides, central arms of Louis XIII [Olivier 2493, fer 4 (mentioning the 1635 edition of this book)], similar semé on spine, gilt edges (minor discreet repairs at corners and head of spine, some faint darkening). Provenance: 18th-century arms of a member of the Portuguese Royal family (woodcut stamp in a lozenge on title verso).

A scholarly edition by Henri de Valois, with a new translation from Greek into Latin. Brunet IV, 792.

LIPSIUS, Justus. Politicorum sive civilis doctrinae libri sex. Antwerp: Plantin press, 1623. 4° (237 x 169mm). Engraved Plantin device on title. (Lightly browned throughout.) Contemporary French tan morocco, sides with a semé of fleurs-de-lys and central arms of the Collège de Grassin [Olivier 1973], spine with a similar semé, gilt edges (a few signs of very slight wear). A handsome prize binding from this college in the Ile-de-France, founded in c.1570 by Thierry Grassin, thanks to the legacy of his elder brother Pierre. (2)
