Pontificale Romanum Clementis VIII. Pont. Max. iussu Restitutum atque Editum. Antwerp: Balthasar Moretus, the widow of Johannes Moretus and Johannes Meursius, 1627. 2° (360 x 235mm). Printed in red and black, engraved title vignette with arms of Clement VIII, printer's device on final recto, woodcut headpieces and initials. (A few sheets browned, a few margins lightly soiled, occasional light spotting.) CONTEMPORARY ROMAN CHESTNUT MOROCCO BOUND BY GREGORIO ANDREOLI FOR POPE INNOCENT XI (Benedetto Odescalchi), with his arms at centre, gold-tooled á la fanfare, strapwork stained black, compartments with various semé of tiny tools, eagle tools echoing Odescalchi arms, flat spine diapered, gilt edges (slightly rubbed, slight wear at spine ends, two small wormholes in spine). Provenance: Benedetto Odescalchi, Pope Innocent XI (1611-1691, pope 1676, binding).
The cherubs, scrolls and tassles around the armorial also occur on a copy of Nicolisi (Rome: 1660), reproduced in the Borghese catalogue (1892), no. 4527 and which is no. 38 in Foot's list of Rospigliosi bindings. The shop has subsequently been identified as that of Gregorio and Giovanni Andreoli (see lot 171).

(Lacking +++8, some dampstaining at upper and lower margin.) CONTEMPORARY ROMAN CHESTNUT MOROCCO BY GREGORIO ANDREOLI, gold-tooled á la fanfare with fan ornament at centre and at upper and lower border, compartments with a semé of small tools, flat spine gilt with fan ornaments, gilt edges (rubbed, wear at spine with leather torn from head, neat restorations).
