3 parts in one volume, 2° (289 x 188mm). Black letter and roman in double column. Title and two sectional titles with repeated woodcut border [McKerrow & Ferguson 76]. Half page woodcut illustrations on A4 of part one, and on the first and last leaf of part three, woodcut historiated and floreated initials, typographical ornaments. B4 in part one, HH1 in part two and AAa1 in part three cancelled. (General title and following leaves in quire A holed at lower margin, L2 with hole at inner margin, BB2 with tear through shoulder note, a few other marginal tears, slightly affecting text on YY2 of part two, final quire holed at upper margin.) LONDON BINDING OF CONTEMPORARY BROWN CALF BY THE MACDURNAN GOSPELS BINDER, sides with a border of blind and gilt fillets enclosing an all-over gilt design with a lozenge-shaped strapwork centre-piece on a ground of hatched lines and corner-pieces on a dotted ground, the remaining space filled with a semis of small flowers, smooth spine with repeated foliate panels between rules, gilt board edges, gilt page edges elaborately gauffeured with a strapwork design, remains of fabric ties on upper cover (a few minor scuff marks and small stains to covers, rubbing and chipping to corners and boards edges, one wormhole and some superficial cracks in spine), the binding contained in velvet-lined red morocco box. Provenance: Thomas Collins (early 17th-century signature on title); shelf marks on front pastedown; Raphael King Ltd., catalogue 51 of 1950, price £350 (tipped-in catalogue description, calling this 'A handsome book in the finest possible state in a peerless contemporary binding').

FIRST AND ONLY EDITION, IN FINE INTERNAL CONDITION, AND IN AN ELIZABETHAN BINDING OF GREAT BEAUTY. This is one of three known copies of the same book bound by the MacDurnan Gospels Binder, the two others being bound for presentation to Elizabeth I and Robert Dudley, Earl of Leicester. The former is included as no. 49 in Howard Nixon Sixteenth-Century Gold-Tooled Bindings in the Pierpont Morgan Library (New York, 1971), the latter was presented by J.W. Hely-Hutchinson to Eton College and is illustrated in Sotheby's sale catalogue of 15 November 1949 (lot 288). The bindery takes its name from the 9th-century Gospels of Maelbright MacDurnan, Abbot of Armagh (d. 927), now in the Library of Lambeth Palace, bound for Archbishop Mathew Parker (1504-1575) who was the bindery's main patron.
