The present edition had two issues, of which this is the first. It was the last edition to be published in the author's lifetime and, containing 58 essays, the most complete hitherto. In his dedication to the Duke of Buckingham, Bacon writes: 'I doe now publish my Essayes; which, of all my other workes, hauve beene most Currant: For that, as it seems, they come home, to Mens Businesse, and Bosomes. I haue enlarged them, both in Number and Weight; So that they are indeed a New Worke.' STC notes 'the numerous variations among copies,' and the final essay in this copy brings the total number to 59 rather than 58.
