BACON, Francis, first Baron Verulam and Viscount St. Albans (1561-1626). The Essayes or Counsells, Civill and Morall. Newly enlarged. London: John Haviland for Hanna Barret and Richard Whitaker, 1625. 4° (176 x 128mm). Title and text within ruled borders. Decorative headpieces and initials. (Title soiled and with several heavy crease marks, also with small repair to outer margin on verso, small stain on D1v, soil marks on 2F3r and 2F4v, some light marginal browning and staining.) Red morocco by Sangorski and Sutcliffe, gilt-panelled sides and spine, gilt turn-ins, gilt edges. Bacon's first volume of Essayes appeared in 1597. The present edition had two issues, of which this is the first. It was the last edition to be published in the author's lifetime and, containing 58 essays, the most complete hitherto. In his dedication to the Duke of Buckingham, Bacon writes: 'I doe now publish my Essayes; which, of all my other workes, hauve beene most Currant: For that, as it seems, they come home, to Mens Businesse, and Bosomes. I haue enlarged them, both in Number and Weight; So that they are indeed a New Worke.' STC notes 'the numerous variations among copies,' and the final essay in this copy brings the total number to 59 rather than 58. Entitled 'Of the Colours of Good and Euill, a Fragment,' it is is not in the table of contents and not called for by Gibson (collation: 2Y-2Z4, 3A4-3C3); Gibson 13; STC 1147.
