2° in 6's (225 x145mm). Woodcut title border with the royal arms at top, a king with crown and sceptre standing by a pillar to each side, and a tablet between two winged female figures at foot [McKerrow and Ferguson 229]. Woodcut ornaments. (Small paper repairs to title and a few other leaves, generally rather soiled, outer margin of the first quire F dampstained, some heavy stains later in text, some lower margins shaved close to catch-word, last leaf of 'The Tragedie of Cleopatra' with rust hole at foot, final leaf repaired at margins.) Maroon morocco gilt by Sangorski and Sutcliffe dated 1904, gilt edges (extremities lightly rubbed). Provenance: Mary Wansley (early ownership signature on title).
Second collected edition, second issue, with only minor typographical variants from the first issue of 1601. This copy is without the pasted over cancel-slips usually found on the verso of A5 of 'Musophilus'. Shakespeare was much influenced by Daniel's The Complaint of Rosamond, traces of which appear in Lucrece, A Lover's Complaint and Romeo and Juliet, and likewise by his sonnets to To Delia.
