8° (172 x 102mm). Woodcut decoration on title, a few headpieces and initials. (Light waterstaining in outer margins at the beginning.) Contemporary limp vellum, double fillet border on sides, in the centre THE ARMS OF CHARLES I AS PRINCE OF WALES and at corners his Feathers, gilt spine (slightly soiled, lacks ties). Provenance: Charles I as Prince of Wales (binding); Andrew Fletcher of Saltoun (signature on rear pastedown).

PROBABLY ONE OF SEVERAL COPIES OF THIS PRIVATELY PRINTED BOOK, DEDICATED TO CHARLES I AS PRINCE OF WALES AND BOUND FOR PRESENTATION. It was reprinted at Rostock in 1624 and again at Frankfurt in 1625; Bayle considered it a book well worth reading and all that we know about his life is contained in the preface. The author, a native of Aberdeen, formed part of the retinue of David Cunningham sent to Denmark, probably in 1594, to announce the birth of Henry, eldest son of James I & VI -- 19 years later he was to publish a threnody on that prince's death. He returned briefly to Scotland and then went to study under Godefroi at Heidelberg. In 1613 he removed to Sedan, and lived there until his death some time before 1630.
