2° (394 x 255mm). Printed in red and black, engraved title, three pages of text within an engraved border, 3 plates (including the repetition of the Crucifixion plate), printed music on 4 staves. (A few crude repairs in the margins towards the end, a little light browning and soiling.) Contemporary brown morocco, compartments of spine panelled in gilt with a small rosette at the centre of each compartment, two double gilt fillet borders round sides, the inner one with a large floral ornament at corners, at centre THE ARMS OF PHILIP HOWARD, CARDINAL OF NORFOLK, red silk tabs attached to the fore-edge (spine chipped at head and a trifle worn at foot, four worm holes in upper cover, slight damage to one of the quarterings also on upper cover). Provenance: Philip Howard, Cardinal of Norfolk (binding).
Philip Howard (1629-1694) was the third son of Henry Howard, third Earl of Arundel. At the age of fifteen, much to the fury of his grandfather, he became a Dominican monk, a move sanctioned by Innocent X a year later. After finishing his education and being ordained priest at the early age of twenty-three, he came to England in 1655 to raise funds for the foundation of an English convent at Bornhem in East Flanders, of which he became the first prior in 1657. At the restoration he returned to England where he was much esteemed by Charles II -- he was one of only six witnesses at the private marriage of Charles to Catherine of Braganza. His proselytising zeal, however, and the part he took in promoting the declaration of indulgence, made him many enemies and he returned to the continent in 1674. The following year he was made a cardinal, spending the rest of his life in Rome.
