MORE, Cresacre (1572-1649). D.O.M.S. The Life and Death of Sir Thomas Moore Lord High Chancellour of England written by M.T.M. [Douai: B. Bellère, 1631?].
4° (192 x 140mm). Woodcut title ornament, headbands and initials. (Title slightly spotted and lightly soiled, the first two quires slightly cropped at lower margin and possibly supplied from another copy, some creasmarks, occasional marginal soiling, verso of final leaf soiled.) Blue morocco gilt by Bedford, sides with inner and outer panel of triple gilt fillets, the inner panel with fleurons at corners, spine in six compartments with raised bands, directly lettered in two, the rest with a repeated bouquet of flowers surrounded by stars and floral sprays, gilt turn-ins, gilt edges (slightly faded). Provenance: Alfrd Henry Huth (morocco book label); John Burns (signature on free endpaper, sold Sotheby's, March 14, 1944, lot 235, to Myers for £11).
FIRST EDITION of this life of More which was reprinted in 1726, and again in 1828. Cresacre More was a lay Catholic who lived at More Place or Gobions, in the parish of North Mimms, Hertfordshire, where he wrote the Life of his great grandfather. It was dedicated to Queen Henrietta Maria, and while derived from William Roper's earlier biography, published in Paris in 1626, contains many fresh details. STC 18066.
