EXTRA-ILLUSTRATED with a proof of each plate as well as engraved views, admission tickets to musical events, and with AN IMPORTANT AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED WITH INITIALS FROM BURNEY TO EDMUND MALONE (1741-1812). Late 19th-century straight-grained red morocco by Bedford, gilt fillets, spine gilt-ruled and lettered, top edge gilt, others uncut. FIRST EDITION. The 1½ pp., 8°, letter, with two integral blanks, from Burney to Malone, dated Queen Anne Street East, 'Wedy. morn.' [May 10 -- 97], describes his formal presentation to the Queen and his gift to her of his own book [? the present work], 'my 4to. ... b[oun]d in flaming red morocco, w[hi]ch, as I was in family mourning, made a splendid contrast with the sable die, and excited so much curiosity, that before her maj[es]ty arrived ... I well remember wishing myself invisible. The book was transferred by the Queen to the vice Chamberlain, after w[hi]ch I had the honour to kiss her royal white hand.' In the second part of the letter, he describes a more informal or 'private presentation' to both the king and queen.
