Polished calf by Rivière, gilt-panelled spines with contrasting morocco labels, gilt edges. FIRST EDITION of Fielding's last novel. Dr. Johnson told Mrs. Piozzi that Amelia was 'perhaps the only book, which being printed off betimes one morning, a new edition was called for before night' (Anecdotes of the late Dr. Samuel Johnson, 1786, p. 221). This was despite the large print run. Strahan printed, and recorded in his ledger, 5000 copies of volumes I - II in December 1751; and another 3000 in January 1752. Rothschild 853.
