(Frontispiece shaved at upper margin and with small stain, frontispiece, title and preliminaries soiled at margins, first gathering a little loose, some leaves dampstained in lower part, quire H with scattered stains, heavy stain at foot of L4 affecting adjacent leaves.) LONDON BINDING OF CONTEMPORARY GILT-TOOLED BLACK TURKEY BY THE GEOMETRICAL COMPARTMENT BINDER, sides with roll-tooled centre panel containing square compartments with lobes on a dotted ground, the middle compartment tooled with rosettes, the remainder with an oval or alternatively a bunch of grapes, inner corners with a fat vase holding leafy sprays surmounted by a thistle, the border with a chain of ovals containing a smaller urn of flowers, the six spine panels filled with small rectangular and L-shaped tools, comb-marbled endpapers, gilt edges gauffered with small flowers and tendrils. (Bowed, front cover with 25mm. wide area of retooling at upper board edge, some light scuff marks, spine rubbed at head and tail, along bands and at joints, corners worn, some rubbing of the gilt fore-edge).

FIRST AND ONLY EDITION. The attractive frontispiece shows a view of the Fleet with a medallion portrait of Queen Anne above. A number of copies of the book have survived in very similar bindings, presumably bound by Gander for presentation (see M. Foot 'English and Foreign Bookbindings,' The Book Collector, Spring 1986, pp. 76-77, and Maggs Catalogue 1075, 1987, no. 115).
