8° (213 x127mm), Engraved frontispiece portrait after Bagford. Errata leaf at end, followed by two woodcut plates showing Caxton's watermarks. (Title lightly soiled, some marginal soiling.) Brown straight-grained morocco by Rivière, ruled in blind and with central arabesque blind-stamped on covers, g.e. (one of two spine labels lacking, extremities lightly rubbed.) Provenance: C.J. Crawfurd (armorial bookplate); Henry Cunliffe (bookplate); bibliographical notes in [?] Cunliffe's hand (on front endpapers).
FIRST EDITION, later reprinted in Dibdin's edition of Ames's TYPOGRAPHICAL ANTIQUITIES (4 vols., 1810-19). Lowdes and Brunet note that 150 copies were printed. The portrait of Caxton is 'fictitious.' Brunet III, 1039; Lowndes p. 1353.
