4° (230 x 185mm.) Interleaved in an album and EXTRA-ILLUSTRATED WITH 28 PLATES, including a series of 8 plates by Le Mire and others after J.M. Moreau Le Jeune, each in two states. Green morocco by Pompey with an inlaid border in contrasting colours forming a strapwork and foliate design, spine gilt-lettered in one compartment, the others inlaid with a blind-tooled foliate motif, brown morocco doublures with a border of clematis inlaid in white with green leaves, green silk liners, top edge gilt (extremities rubbed). Provenance: Mortimer L. Schiff (bookplate, sold Sotheby's, 25 March 1938, lot 479, to Sir F. Swettenham for £10.)

FIRST EDITION OF THIS RARE PARODY of Pope's 'Eloisa to Abelard,' variously attributed to John Mathews, Richard Porson, George Tierney and Coffin. The illustrations also include a hand-coloured engraving of the lovers by Mixelle after Cheveau, and a portrait of Pope by J. Collyer.
