8° (187 x 115mm). Half-title. Woodcut head- and tail-pieces. (Light spotting and small neat repairs affecting text on a few leaves.) Late 19th-/early 20th-century calf gilt, the covers with a central gilt oval formed of 2 leafy sprays, triple gilt fillet borders, the spine gilt in 6 compartments, gilt morocco lettering-pieces in 2 compartments and dated gilt lettering-piece at the foot, the other compartments decorated with flowers formed of red inlays surrounded by gilt foliate tools, gilt dentelles on turn-ins, gilt edges. Provenance: Maurice Baring (1874-1946, cf. The Modern Library at Watlington Park); Oliver Sylvain Baliol Brett, third Viscount Esher (1881-1963, armorial bookplate); the Esher sale, Sotheby's, the first portion commencing 25 March 1946, lot 272.

FIRST EDITION. FROM THE LIBRARIES OF MAURICE BARING AND OLIVER BRETT, VISCOUNT ESHER. The present copy bears all the points of the first edition: the sheets are watermarked 'LL 1806'; D3 has been cancelled and p.5 lines 2-3 read 'where , where'; p.22 is reset and carries no footnote; p.114 has the misprint 'thnnder' in line 4; and p.181 has the misprint 'Thc' in the penultimate line. The present work is listed on p.54 of the catalogue of The Modern Library at Watlington Park ([London]:1930) as 'Maurice Baring's copy'. Hayward 218; Randolph p.9; Wise Byron I, pp.7-8.
