The Orthodox church of San Giorgio dei Greci, designed by Jacopo Sansovino, was built for the Greek colony in Venice, which numbered 10,000 at its height. This drawing would seem to be the first work to have been numbered on Lear's second visit to Venice in November 1865 (his first had been in 1857); See lot 104s and 108 for other works executed on the same visit.
