A Swept-Hilt Rapier
Early 17th Century
With tapering blade of flattened diamond section with narrow central fuller on each face extending almost to the point, rectangular ricasso stamped on the front with dots and two 'sickle' marks, iron hilt of deeply fluted bars interrupted by knops and comprising asymmetrical guard (loose) above a solid shell on the inner side, and an oval side-ring filled by a pierced sprung in plate on the inner side, boldly fluted barrel-shaped pommel, and wooden grip with remains of copper wire binding (rust patinated throughout, especially on the inner side)
