A 'Spanish' Morion
North Italian, late 16th Century
Of one piece, with almond-shaped skull rising to a stalk and encircled at the base with later lining-rivets, each with brass rosette-shaped washer, and narrow brim struck with a mark (plume-holder missing, minor pitting)

Lot Essay

The mark, which represents the arms of the Barberini family under a coronet, is found on a large group of 'Spanish' morions from the old Papal armoury, now in the Museo Storico Vaticano in the Lateran Palace, Rome
