A 25-Bore Viennese Wheel-Lock Sporting Rifle, And A Spanish Horn Powder-Flask
The first by Caspar Zelner (sic), circa 1720, the second mid-18th Century
The first with swamped octagonal barrel cut with seven grooves, brass fore-sight and iron triple-leaf back-sight with chiselled foliate finial, the breech retaining faint traces of blued finish and inlaid with gold lines and foliage and a standing Roman warrior surmounted by a gold-lined maker's mark (similar to Neue Støckel 1203) and gold-inlaid signature, engraved tang stamped with the number '2', flat lock with enclosed wheel finely engraved with a cavalry skirmish on a matted ground and mounted warriors in combat, one of them a Turk, all in an extensive landscape, the cock engraved with St. George and the Dragon, and the bridle to the cock with a martial trophy, figured walnut full stock lightly carved with strapwork and foliage in relief (bruised and repaired, fore-stock and ramrod-pipes replaced), later patch-box cover, engraved indented iron trigger-guard with chiselled foliate finials, pierced iron side-plate finely chiselled in relief with foliage involving a monster-head, horn butt-plate with iron button, set trigger with engraved brass plate, and later ramrod; the second with iron mounts including belt hook, and brass baluster nozzle

Lot Essay

Caspar Zellner (1661-1745), a member of the large Zellner gunmaking family which originated in Salzburg, was admitted to the Vienna gunmakers' guild in 1690, and became master in 1695. He was one of the chief gunmakers to the Emperors Joseph I and Karl VI. The former Imperial collections in the Hofjagd- und Leibrüstkammer contain nearly one hundred firearms made by him
