Lot Essay

This belongs to a rare group of English hangers discussed ibid., pp. 75-6, of which only three other examples have been recorded, one with brass mounts. Two bear the London hallmark and date letters for respectively 1696 and 1702, and a third the mark of the London hilt-maker Thomas Vicaridge of New Street, London (recorded 1682-1716)
