Lot Essay

2nd Lieutenant Ian Dermid Campbell was born in Edinburgh in October 1898 and volunteered for the Royal Flying Corps in July 1915, direct from Murchiston Castle School. Sometime thereafter posted as a Pilot to No. 24 Squadron on the Western Front, he was killed in action in his DH5 in a combat over Bourlon Wood at 1 p.m. on 30.11.1917. In a letter of condolence to his sister, fellow Squadron member Captain Paul Beanlank described Campbell as an 'excellent Pilot and a thoroughly courageous soldier'. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Arras Flying Services Memorial.
