Musician George Thomas Startup served throughout the Great War aboard the Battle Cruiser H.M.S. Princess Royal and was present at the Battles of Dogger Bank and Jutland.
Colonel Sydney Stead Appleyard was born in Huddersfield in 1897 and enlisted in the Royal Marine Light Infantry as a Private in April 1915. Commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in 1920, following active service in the Great War, he was posted to the Dardanelles, where he commanded a Battery on the Soghani River. Appleyard subsequently specialised in Gunnery and Ordnance, in which field he held a number of appointments in the inter-War period, latterly as a Major on the China Station. During the 1939-45 War, among other duties, he served as a Lieutenant-Colonel with the Admiralty Technical Mission to Canada. Afterwards a Naval Adviser at the M.O.D., he was advanced to Colonel and sat on the Ordnance Board and in 1954 became the Assistant Inspector of Naval Ordnance Board. Appleyard finally retired in 1959 and died in the following year.
